Last Thursday, while Ben and I were out with Mark, Ben mentioned going to the beach the next day with Peter. So the next day we woke up, boarded a train, and headed out. We had no real plan, no place to stay, just figured everything would work out in the end, and work out it did. Boryeong is in the middle of the west coast on Korea, so the train took about 2 and a half hours. They had no seat tickets left, so we had to sit on the stairs in between cars with the other people who bought standing tickets.
Ben and I got there at around seven, but Peter has to work on Fridays so he caught a train after work.
We made it to the beach just in time to get some beer and watch the sunset. Ben picked this beach because he went there the week before and said it was nice an quiet. It was anything but. It seemed to be some kind of college party. College students were everywhere and there were dj booths and entertainment and whatnot. Unfortunately, there was about 95% guys and 5% girls. We sat on the steps and watched groups of guys after guys go up and talk to the few groups of girls, only to get rejected.
Peter got there at around 11, so we got some dinner and something to drink. We ate dinner on the second floor of a building overlooking the square so it was the perfect people watching place. The square was packed with people, you couldn't even move. All of them were just listening to the music and hanging out. We worried about a place to stay because there was so many people, but we didn't let it bother us. When we left the restaurant, we joined the party. We hung out in the square and tried to do what the locals did. There was a large group having some kind of contest where you get blindfolded, spun around ten times, and given a wooden stick. You then get ten steps to try and find and hit the watermelon on the other end of the square. Somehow, we pushed Peter into trying it. He held the stick up like a baseball bat while taking his steps. First, he went too far right, and everyone on the right started screaming and backing away. Then he went straight left and everyone on the left started screaming and running away. After his ten steps were up, he was nowhere near the watermelon. There was a stage playing a mix of American hip hop and K-Pop that everyone was hanging out and dancing to. Before we knew it, the sun came up.
The moon was still lookin out over the sea.
As the sun came up, most people left the square. However, since we didn't have a place to stay, we just stayed put. Our next plan of action was to get a beach umbrella and just snooze on the beach during the day.
This South African girl came out at around 6 in the morning. Her goal was to go on an early morning run and then hang out on the beach. However, when she met us in our state, she wanted to drink. So she ended up buying us all a beer and hanging out. Ben introduced us as Peter, Paul and John. She told us her name was Mildred, so thats what we went with the whole day. Someone who stayed up past the sunrise ended up drunkenly throwing her motel key into the ocean. A Korean kid ran into the ocean to look for her keys but got yelled at by the cops to get out. When he got out of the ocean, he reached into his pocket and realized he ran into the ocean with his iphone in his pocket. Instead of getting mad, Mildred thought it was funny.
We also met this crazy Korean girl, who at first, yelled at us and wanted nothing to do with us, but because of Ben's charm she ended up following us around all day. She knew as much English as we knew Korean, so we didn't talk much, but it was never awkward. We went swimming for the first few hours of the day and then napped under a beach umbrella. Later that day we got some pizza and headed home. When we got home, Ben and I immediately went shopping for aloe lotion. For some reason, I always forget to put on sunscreen. This is what happened this time:
Last night we had a barbeque on the roof. Suzie made homemade hamburgers that were delicious. There was also hot dogs, salad, and chips.
After the barbeque we went to Gold Bar to meet up with Joon and watch some of the Olympics. They were showing the Korea vs America volleyball game. America won!
Also, while I was watching the Olympics I noticed this guy from Poland who looks EXACTLY like Andy Pod. Crazy!
